Interview with Marvin Gearhart concerning his experiences as Chairman of the Board, President, and CEO of Gearhart Industries, Inc. in Fort Worth, Texas. Gearhart discusses his family background, farming, oil drilling, and educational experiences in south-eastern Kansas, his employment as a trainee field engineer for wireline service company, Welex, in 1949, his work for Dresser Company in 1952, and the establishment of a wireline logging unit with Harold Owen in 1955. He also talks about the formation of GO Perforator Supply, the separation of Gearhart-Owen Company from the Pengo Company, the growth of worldwide sales, the construction of his first shop in Fort Worth in 1957, his proprietary and non-proprietary equipment, the oil-drilling process, and personnel in the field. Gearhart comments on the modal analysis and safety program, the manufacturing plant and employee training, financing the company through the sale of stock, the company's organizational structure, competitors Dresser Industries and Schlumberger, and the first lay-offs in company history in 1982. Finally, Gearhart shares his views on OSHA and EEOC regulations, the goals for the company, the factors contributing to the company's success, the importance of communication within a company, and his civic activities.
